Structure of New York State’s Horse Industry and relationship to Agriculture

The New York State Horse Council has established equestrian partnerships and memberships to preserve our horse industry.

At the national level:

  •  The American Horse Council, Washington, D.C. www.horsecouncil.org
  • The State Horse Council Advisory Committee, comprised of all state horse council’s affiliated with the American Horse Council - www.statehorsecouncils.org
  • United States Equestrian Federation, Kentucky (formerly the American Horse Show Association) www.usef.org
  • Equestrian Land Conservation Resource www.elcr.org

At the New York State level:

Two important initiatives that we are involved in concern the Equine Committee of the Farm Bureau which is designed to ensure that the horse is recognized and supported by the Farm Bureau statewide. The committee is used as a sounding board for Farm Bureau policies and also as a feeder organization for defining the horse's role within the overall Farm Bureau concept of agricultural operations.

The second is a fairly new organization formed in the mid 1990’s and known as the New York State Equine Industry Leaders. It is designed to bring the various disciplines within the Sport Horse world, the various breed organizations, the two major racing groups (Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds). State equine educators, and other ancillary and state organizations together in a forum which will support the horse industry in New York. As the umbrella organization for the Sport Horse within the state, the Horse Council is strongly represented in this ad hoc organization. Officially the impressive list of members are:
